Billy wasted no time analyzing the data from the disastrous date. It wasn’t a date, but whatever it was. She made a spreadsheet with a list of every action she could remember and its corresponding reaction from Andi. She included a column of “scenarios” that she included possible interpretations Andi may have had.

#3—Action: A’s lips brush my cheek in the doorway. Response: Goose pimples for me, grin for A. Scenarios: She enjoyed teasing me. She was embarrassed about the contact but didn’t know how to respond.

She worked from her kitchen nook, subsisting on her gargantuan coffee as she tortured herself to remember every thrown signal, every word exchanged, every glance and shift, trying to make sense of the outcome. She was in the middle of Andi asking how they were going to fit six people in the four-person hot tub when her phone strobed a new text.

*Mel: I hope you’re still sleeping

Billy waited to respond, not knowing what to say. The last thing she wanted to tell Mel was that they had sex and Andi was out the door at first light. If 11 a.m. was first light. Mel would tell Billy she must be tragically bad at sex, even though Mel used to beg for her. She didn’t want to deal.

*Billy: I wish. She had to bounce.

*Mel: bounce? Uh-oh, that doesn’t sound good

*Mel: You’re not saying it, but I can tell you slept with her. Now she’s already gone. I hope you made her breakfast. Your crepes can seal any deal.

*Mel: No breakfast? Your (STET) slipping

*Billy: Did you only stay with me for that year because I made you food?

*Billy: Fuck you.

*Billy: I’m working, Mel. What’s up?

*Mel: it’s saturday, why are you working?

*Mel: hose sounds more interesting.

*Billy: Melly.

*Billy: Fuck, my car.

*Mel: I’d rather fuck your gf

*Billy: Are you offering to bring my car over or just throwing in my face that it’s still there?

*Mel: I’ve got Fiona with me. It wouldn’t be a big deal to drop it off, but I’m afraid to see you in whatever state your in
